Don’t be a doos*

The problem with social media? Too much damn crap.

Way too many random posts cluttering up our feeds, causing scrolling fatigue. And no matter how often you review your follows, edit and un-follow…CRAP.

Because let’s face it, 99% of us on social media lead rather normal sit-in-front-of-the telly-playing-Candy-Crush kind of lives. And unless you’re 16, or an influencer, that’s normal. And normal does not make for good entertainment.

Your brand has one hell of a job to do to cut through this malaise and stick in our feeds, and in our minds. Small businesses - without social teams, marketing departments and multi-acronym-titled agencies behind the strategy and messaging, where you are founder, marketer, designer and tweeter - have to work even smarter on getting bang for your buck.

So here are my three (free) tips on how not to be a doos* and dilute your brand image with tacky, ill-suited and flawed messaging:

1.    Clarity

Know what your brand stands for. Get clear on your message. And if you and your personal ambitions feel at odds with your brand message on any given day? Step away from your keypad. Brand wins every time. No question.

2.    Consistency

Stick to your core messaging and founding values, consistently. Flip-flopping between different tones of voice and your personal moods or feelings, creates posts in bad taste that bite your brand.

3.   Consideration

Vanity (and insecurity) has no place in branding. Every business has a fiscal objective. Make sure you've adequately considered and aligned your communications strategy to this target and keep that as your focus whenever you consider posting.

Don’t become another social number. Get your normal personal shit out of the way and make your views or likes count where they matter most; on your brand.

If you need some help figuring out what these three 'C's mean for your business, hit me up. We’ll help you get brand fatigue out of your feed.

*Doos is Afrikaans slang for “idiot” (putting it kindly!)
